Urban Outfitters Goes Fur Free

I want to give a huge shout out to Joshua at The Discerning Brute for getting the word out on the Urban Outfitter's fur scandal! Urban Outfitters was selling real fur, despite being a part of the coalition of Fur-Free Retailers, Designers, and Brands. It was real fur and it was unlabeled. The new Truth In Fur Labeling act requires that fur must be clearly labeled. I wrote Urban Outfitters dozens of times and they continued to deny that it was real fur. While they kept denying the issue, I wrote everyone, and the word got out. That's the power of the internet, when issues like these go viral, and activists don't give up ---> CHANGE can happen! Bravo guys!  Urban Outfitters, we want an apology! This is REAL FUR!

Thank you again Joshua!

Hello Amy,
Please be advised that this product is made of cotton, acrylic, and polyester. It does not contain any fur whatsoever. I apologize for the confusion.
If you require additional assistance or have any other questions, please contact us at service@urbanoutfitters.com

Sincerely,
Josh Hilburn

I'm thankful for everyone who got the word out.  A big hip hip hurray to The Humane Society and Change.org.

  1. Hi Amy,
Stumbled across your blog and saw how passionate you were about fur...
Anyways, as you know most fur is marked as 'rabbit'... but did you know that most 'rabbit' fur that comes out of China is actually cat or dog fur?! They use cat and dog fur, but then purposely mislabel it as rabbit fur, as it is illegal for America, Australia and most of europe to import and sell cat or dog fur, but not rabbit.
Whats worse is these animals are skinned ALIVE because it is easier and quicker to remove the fur while they're convulsing in pain - and time means money (sick and sad i know, but people who are passionate about putting a stop to real fur being used need to know the facts).. they are often thrown to a pile and left to die from pain. They do NOTHING to them before skinning them - they hang them, as they do the rabbits, and then just start skinning. And nothing to put them out of their misery afterwards. (you can find info regarding this on google, i saw a video of it being done but i can't remember what site)
I'm telling you this just in case you don't know.. as i know you have quite a few followers, and next time you want to post something about fur you might want to include something about this to maybe hit home to more people. As people who wear fur, can generally ignore the fact that its a real animal because they've never had a rabbit as a pet, and they just think of them as vermon... but imagine how many more people you could touch if they were forced to think of it as their beloved cat or dog enduring this pain just to make a fashion statement!!!
At the end of the day, if you wouldn't wear your cat or dog... don't wear fur!!
Good on you for all that you do regarding fur!
    Sarah :)

  2. Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, I'm well aware about the horrible fur trade in China. That's why I believe the Truth in Fur Labeling Act is so important. You bring up a very good point, and I'll try to include more of the information in my posts. That's why I've started up Fur Free Los Angeles: http://www.facebook.com/FurFreeLosAngeles Which is trying to raise awareness of the issues and make compassion a part of fashion. I'm trying to balance the fur trade videos and information with vegan fashion. Thank you again for writing me and hope to hear more for you!

  3. This is really horrible, and i can't bring myself to watch the entire thing.
But fur wearers and buyers need to know!!! The sooner we stop buying fur, the sooner these animals will stop being cruelly killed.
Here is the link to the website which has the video towards the bottom of the page..
